The Interim Report of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission was released in December 2008, the commission established by the Prime Minister and Health Minister in February 2008 was tasked with developing a long-term health reform plan for Australia.
Numerous submissions and discussions took place in order to develop this report into a concise and honest document that was mindful of the importance that such a body of work could contain. All submissions available via www.nhhrc.org.au
A Portion of the report ‘Facing inequities: recognise and tackle the causes and impacts of health inequities’ discusses the need for Australia to be able to offer equitable access to dental care. Thus the development of ‘Denticare Australia’.
Under this scheme all Australians would be covered for preventive diagnostic and restorative services, including extractions and DENTURES. The scheme would be funded by an increase in the Medicare Levy of 0.75% of taxable income
allowing those on a low income to pay a relatively small extra amount but have far better access to dental health services.
This report is reliant on two strategies;
- Expand the clinical experience and training of the dental workforce, introducing a one-year internship scheme prior to full registration.Note only Dentists, Hygienists and Therapists were mentioned - what about DP/DT’s
- Propose to move to a nationally expanded Pre-school and school dental program.
